Swish, which was launched in 2012, today has over 8.6 million users and only during December last year, private individuals conducted 43.5 million transfers through the service. In total, these transfers included just over SEK 28.2 million.

But during the same month, on Christmas Eve in 2024, Swish was hit by extensive technical problems, which according to Aftonbladet lasted for 13 hours.

In the incident history that Swish reports, the problems are referred to as “minor incidents”, which according to the owner company GetSwish means performance deterioration in the service.

However, the operational disruption on December 24 last year is one of several that Swish has suffered. In a new review of new technology, which looked at the company’s incident reporting, it turns out that 103 incidents hit the service during the period August-December 2024.

In total, Swish has been affected by severe operational disruptions for 145 hours and 14 minutes, which corresponds to six days, one hour and 14 minutes, according to the newspaper.

– Swish is an important part of the Swedish payment system and consumers should be able to trust that it works. The banks need to ensure that they do what is required of them to minimize the risk of this type of disturbance, says Mithra Sundberghead of payment supervision at Finansinspektionen, to new technology.

According to new technology, the majority of operational disruptions are short -lived and have usually occurred at night. Many of the incidents are also linked to an individual connected bank, which means that people associated with other banks have been able to use the service without problems.

The review shows that two major banks stand out when it comes to the operational disruptions in Swish: Nordea and Swedbank. 43 of the 103 reported incidents have hit these two players.

Swish: Looking seriously at the disturbances

To new technology, Charlotta Lindblad writes that Getswish “works hard with Swish’s stability”:

“Unfortunately, there are sometimes malfunctions. We obviously look at it seriously and apologize for any problems and inconveniences that the disturbances can cause users. We cannot comment on any detailed details about the disturbances.”
