German’s election winner Friedrich Merz wants to one Europe to reach greater independence from a United States governed by Donald Trump.

“For me, it is an absolute priority to strengthen Europe as soon as possible,” he says in German television.

Donald Trump paid tribute to the German election results. But the prospective Chancellor Friedrich Merz is not as overwhelmingly positive about the US president’s previous statements.

“I never thought I would have to say anyone like this on TV,” he said in the public service channel ARD before he took the statement:

– After the latest statements from Donald Trump last week, it is clear that the Americans, at least those in the current US government, do not largely care about Europe’s fate at all.

Already before the election, the Christian Democratic leader has had contact with several European leaders about future common strategies.

– For me, it is an absolute priority to strengthen Europe as soon as possible, so that we can achieve independence from the United States step by step.

Prior to the election, the German authorities warned of Russian influence and involvement in the electoral movement. But Merz says the threat not only comes from the east, DW reports.

He is not least accusing the tech billionaire and Trump advisor Elon Musk of having intervened in the German election with his stated support to the external right AfD. Last Saturday, Musk wrote “AfD!” on his platform X.

– Washington’s choice of choice was no less dramatic and shameless than the one we have seen from Moscow, says Merz, calling Musk’s behavior “shameless”.
