The Medical Association opposes euthanasia: “The patient may feel pressured”
Emily Young’s mother died in the suites of cancer. Her last wish was to get help to die, and Emily promised her mother to spread her desire for euthanasia.
“Mom was too sick, so she asked me to do it,” she says.
On November 25, 2021, the doctor Liisa Marin died in the suites of ovarian cancer. Her last time was very painful and the last three days she was anesthetized through so -called pallitative sedation.
– When palliative care is not enough, life becomes torture. For the last few months, Mom couldn’t eat. She had constant nausea, she was hypersensitive to morphine, nothing could help her, says Emily Young, who among other things has written a debate article in Expressen on the subject of euthanasia.
Had seen others suffer
Liisa Marin was a doctor and already when Emily was a teenager told about how terrible lately can be for some people.
– She wished there was something she could do. People in healthcare do what they can to relieve and are absolutely fantastic, but I am here for them where it is not enough. For those who vomit all the time and where the pain relief does not help, says Emily Young.
The Medical Association is opposed
The Medical Association is against euthanasia and Christofer Lindholm, chief physician and chairman of the Medical Association’s ethics and responsibility council, says there are two strong reasons for it:
– It is difficult to evaluate a patient’s desire for euthanasia. For example, the desire to end one’s life can be based on a depression. It may be that the patient feels pressured to request euthanasia for not being a burden for relatives, care or society, he says.
Christofer Lindholm also indicates that if you move the limit, the regulations risk becoming more permissive over time.
– Doctors must never take measures aimed at speeding death. Our task is to provide care, cure, treat and relieve diseases, he says in News Morning.
For a while on earth
Emily says it was indescribable to see her mother die in the way she did.
– Mom was so strong, she had so strong pity and had done so much for others. If she had had to choose completely herself, I think she would have chosen for a while on earth, many are afraid that euthanasia will make people want to die earlier, but I think it is the other way around, it is nice to have the choice that you can can Get euthanasia if it gets so bad that you can’t live.
