In Madagascar, the “hybrid rice” program was launched last week, with great fanfare, by the President of the Republic, as part of the agricultural transformation of the island. Seeds of a Chinese hybrid variety as well as chemical fertilizers were distributed free of charge by the State to 1,400 farmers. This hybrid rice is presented by the government as the future for the country and the key for a return to self -sufficiency in rice – lost, since 1975 – but the peasants still ask to be convinced.
