Authority’s joint effort

Before the turn of the year, a government -joint control of nail salons was carried out in several of the country’s counties. The Swedish Tax Agency, the Swedish Work Environment Authority, the Equality Authority and the police participated in the control effort. A total of 80 nail salons were visited, of which just over half of the salons had significant deficiencies. The inspectors discovered serious work environment risks, including poor ventilation, long working days and the lack of service certificates for work with hazardous chemicals that require medical certificates.

– It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure that the working environment is healthy. No one should have to risk their health at work, says Arne Alfredssonhead of government cooperation against working life crime at the Swedish Work Environment Authority as per Tt.

Organized crime

In control, organized crime was also discovered and a case of human exploitation.

– In several cases, we see connections to organized crime. These actors use vulnerable individuals and make big money on crime in working life. Through collaboration, we can effectively put a stop to this, says Per WadhedHead of the Secretariat for Authority Cooperation at the Police according to TT.

“As a customer you also carry a responsibility”

News24 Have talked to Sara SvenssonThe Swedish Work Environment Authority’s coordinator for the work against working life crime in Stockholm. Svensson is not surprised by the results of the controls and believes that customers also bear a responsibility in the stall.

– It is a well -known phenomenon and we can counteract the problem of government tools, but as a customer you also have to be active and do right for themselves, says Svensson and continues:

– People want it as cheap as possible, you are almost many times. But as a customer you also wear a responsibility. It is pure workplace crime where people are exploited.

You as a customer can do this

In order to reduce the risk as a customer to contribute to continued crime and horrible working conditions, you can, according to Svensson, keep track of the following:

  • The price. If the price for new nails is around SEK 300-400 you should be attentive. Probably the employees are not very well paid when the price is so low. Svensson has a hard time answering what is considered a reasonable price and recommends you as a customer to compare among different salons and think about what is a reasonable pricing.
  • Ventilation. Since those who work at nail salon work with dangerous chemicals, it is a rule that the salon should have a functioning ventilation. As a result, you as a customer can pay attention to the smell. If it smells strongly of chemicals, the salon probably does not meet the requirements.
  • Functioning and turned on point extraction. At each table there should be a point extraction that absorbs both dust from the nails and some smell. The extraction should be both functioning and turned on.
  • Size of the salon. There are rules that staff should have access to toilet and staff space. If the salon is small or if it is located in a shopping center, you can find out if there are common residence space at the actual mall for staff working. If there is no, the salon itself must meet spaces that meet the requirements for size.
  • Tip authorities or police. If you assume that a nail salon or other salon does not comply with laws and regulations, you as a customer can help by telling the police. On the police homepage As a customer, you can fill in tips where you fill in which salon applies.
