For some, Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to curl up in front of a good romantic comedy and dream of romance. Netflix currently offers classic romances in its catalog, but also a cult film which wonders what makes romantic relationships. And it begins with a break.
The protagonists of this feature film, Joel and Clementine, meet on Valentine’s Day. But one day, Joel learns that Clementine has definitively erased him from his memory thanks to a new technology. Suffering terribly, he decides to do the same. But for that, he must be unconscious and plunge back into his memories. He then saw his romance with Clémence upside down, and gradually remembers what made him fell in love with her. But can it stop the process before it is too late?
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a film directed by Michel Gondry, featuring Jim Carrey (which then surprises by adopting the dramatic register) and Kate Winslet (always impeccable) in the main duo. Hailed when it was released in 2004, this drama won the Oscar for the best original scenario the following year, as well as two BAFTA.
The feature film was acclaimed by criticism for its poetic visual inventiveness, but also for its writing which offers an overwhelming travel in the vestiges of a lost love. The result is a sweetness-bitter romance, imprint of nostalgia and subtle, which radically changes from the usual romantic comedies to which the public is used to Valentine’s Day. Facing at Carrey and Winslet, the public will also recognize Mark Ruffalo, Elijah Wood, or Kirsten Dunst.
