This is how Trump and Putins call is interpreted in

US president Donald Trump said he had spoken to the Russian President Vladimir Putin With Wednesday. According to Trump, the topic was to start negotiations to end the war in Ukraine.

Later also the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyin And Trump was said to have spoken on the phone.

In this story, EPN’s journalists from the United States, Russia and Ukraine tell us how the call is interpreted in these countries.

Maxim Fedorov, Ylen Ukrainian journalist

– It would have been desirable for Ukraine to have talked to Zelensky first and then with Putin, but this time went differently, says Maxim Fedorov Kiev.

Fedorov says that talking about peace at this point is still too optimistic.

– I find it likely that this year the parties will be able to get to the negotiating table and possibly fit some kind of ceasefire or truce. But still, Ukraine’s and Russia’s views on the boundaries of peace are so badly crossed that you can’t talk about any more permanent peace, Fedorov says.

According to Fedorov, the threat of Russia would not necessarily be eliminated even with the peace treaty, even if Ukraine agreed to major concessions.

-In a recent interview, Zelenskyi has said that Ukraine should not be required to grant too many concessions, as the fact that the non-attacked party is ready to negotiate with the offensive party is a pretty big compromise. I bet that Ukraine’s non -alignment and regional issues will rise in the negotiations. Zelenskyi has flashed the replacement of the Kursk region with Russia -occupied areas, but the Kreml has already crushed this idea.

Heikki Heiskanen, Ylen Moscow correspondent

Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov has described Putin and Trump’s debate as long and relevant.

– Peskov said Vladimir Putin emphasized in the telephone conversation that a long -term solution to the Ukrainian war should be obtained. It suggests that Putin holds on to his very strict conditions, in Moscow Heikki Heiskanen says.

– Putin certainly believes that he is now going to the negotiations from a very strong position. Russia has long been on the neck and has progressed on the front and battles, although Ukraine still holds part of the Russian Kursk region. The Russian economy has endured much better than expected sanctions than expected.

Heiskanen says that Putin’s self -confidence is also raised by the fact that the administration in the United States is much less committed to defending Ukraine’s interests.

– Of course, some of the Russian elite may have fatigue to war. It is not necessarily difficult for Russian citizens to sell the end of war. In that sense, Putin has the ability to go on to these negotiations, but yes, his conditions will be very tough.

– He said that both he and Putin think that war and killing must stop. He also spoke that both agreed that now we had to start a very close cooperation.

Von Bonsdorff points out that the recent US Minister of Defense Pete Heggeth Today, it has been “pretty much” on what kind of settings the United States could go on to discuss the future of Ukraine.

– He said that the United States believes that Ukraine should not dream of returning to the borders of 2014. He also said frankly that Ukraine’s NATO membership in the future is not realistic, and this is, of course, something that NATO has promised to Ukraine for a long time.
