Local COVID hospitalizations increase slightly

The Brant Community Healthcare System on Friday reported 30 COVD-19 patients in hospital, with two in critical care.

On Wednesday, there were 28 COVID patients in hospital, with one in critical care.

Of the patients admitted to hospital, 136 have been unvaccinated for a rate of 661.99 per 100,000 people, while 198 have been vaccinated for a rate of 175.78/100,000. In ICUs, 16 people were unvaccinated for a rate of 77.88/100,000 and 20 were fully vaccinated for rate of 17.94/100,000.

Also on Friday, the Brant County Health Unit reported 47 new COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours, however, that number likely is underreported because of limited testing.

Since the pandemic began in March of 2020, 9,558 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Brantford-Brant, with 8,918 of those resulting in recovered cases.

There are currently 253 active cases in the community but that number is also likely underreported.

There have been 67 COVID-19 deaths reported since the start of the pandemic.

There have been 328,488 total doses of the vaccine administered at vaccination clinics in Brantford-Brant. In Brantford-Brant, 84.33 per cent of residents, aged five and older, have received one dose of the vaccine while 81.22 per cent have received two or more doses.

  • St. Leonard’s Community Services Cornerstone House, April 8, three residents and four staff members
  • Tranquility Place Retirement Home, April 5, 24 residents and four staff members
  • Riverview Terrace in Brantford, March 28, eight residents and one staff member
  • Brantford General Hospital (Unit B8), April 21, two patients
  • Brantford General Hospital (Unit C5), April 14, three patients
  • Brantford General Hospital (Unit B7), April 12, two patients and two staff members

The Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic and Grand Erie district school boards are reporting the percentage of absences for students and staff at each of their schools. As of Wednesday, there were 37 active cases on Six Nations of the Grand River and 52 people are in self-isolation.

One person from Six Nations is currently hospitalized with the virus.

Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 1,609 confirmed COVID cases on Six Nations.

Exact numbers are not available but 55 per cent of the population has received a dose of the vaccination, with 51 per cent competing in their vaccination series.

There have been 24 COVID-19 deaths on Six Nations of the Grand River since the start of the pandemic two years ago.

On Friday, Public Health Ontario reported 1,591 people in hospital. Of those in hospital, 214 are in intensive care,

The province reported 4,668 new cases over the past 24 hours although that number is likely underreported due to limited access to testing. However, it was noted by the Minister of Health that Friday’s case count was due to a data catch-up.

There were 27 new COVID-19 deaths reported on Friday and there have been 12,704 deaths in the province since the start of the pandemic in March of 2020.
