They are called “blood minerals”. Coltan, tungsten, tin and gold, materials extracted in the Great Lakes region, are used in particular to manufacture smartphones. The minerals partly finance the rebels of the M23, active in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). European environmental deputies try to push the European Union to stop buying these components in Rwanda, with the support of an important voice: that of the Nobel Peace Prize, Denis Mukwege.
