The departure announcement comes after the middle -oriented Iohannis is threatened with national law by parliamentarians from the country’s extreme right, Reuters reports.
– To save Romania and the Romanian people a crisis … I depart from the presidential office, says Iohannis, according to AFP, adding that he will formally end on Wednesday.
Klaus Iohanni’s term of office really expired on December 21. But the presidential election held then was annulled due to charges of Russian influence. The Supreme Court ruled that the presidential election must be redone and asked Iohannis to stay at the post until then.
The first round of elections is scheduled to be held on May 4, and a second on May 18, if no candidate receives more than 50 percent of the vote in the first.
