Hughes, 25, was on the sidelines for the last four matches in Vancouver before the national team break. Vancouver captain has scored 14+45 = 59 in 47 matches this season.
Sanderson, 22, who jumps into Hughes boots, has done 5+30 = 35 in 55 matches this season.
Hughes was selected for the US team among the first six players. His younger brother, an attacker Jack Hughes was selected for the team in December.
Finland will face the United States in its opening match. The match will be played in Montreal Finnish time the night before Friday.
