Deficiencies were discovered at all the maternity care clinics inspected by IVO.

“This is a signal that the form of care needs to be improved,” says Lennart Pettersson, Head of Unit at IVO.

The Inspection for Health and Care (IVO) has been given the government’s task to strengthen the supervision of maternal health during 2023-2025.

Now 18 healthcare providers, of which six who are run under private management, and their 34 operations in 12 regions have been inspected.

“We have seen shortcomings on all of the selected receptions we have visited,” says Lennart Pettersson, in a press release.

For example, the deficiencies are about the lack of systematic self -control, insufficient competence to carry out examinations of the pelvic floor at the post -check and that the patient is not informed about where to turn in the event of a childbirth.

As a consequence of the inspections, IVO has made 18 decisions on deficiencies and the request for reproduction of measures taken. The caregivers must report to IVO by March 14.

“The result of the supervision covers only a fraction of the maternal health care in Sweden. This is a signal that the form of care needs to be improved, ”says Pettersson.
