A 7.6 magnitude earthquake was recorded in the Caribbean, 10km deep. Such a shock causes large waves, but the tsunami alert has been lifted.
An earthquake that could have led to a disaster. The American Geological Institute (USGS) reported that an earthquake of magnitude 7.6 took place on Saturday February 8 in the Caribbean mother, 10 kilometers deep. By trembling, the earth causes waves that can be qualified as tsunami. A tsunami alert was therefore initiated in Cuba, Honduras, the Cayman Islands, Rico Porte and the Virgin Islands.
The German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) assessed this earthquake at 7.5. This magnitude is one of the highest on the Richter scale, which goes from 1 to 9.
The tsunami alert was lifted
According to the Tsunamis alert center in the Pacific, the waves caused by such a shock could have reached 1 meter for Honduras and the Cayman islands and up to 3 meters in Cuba. The alert was finally lifted a few hours later. It is the strongest earthquake since 2021 in the region, when an earthquake of magnitude 7.2 had struck Haiti.
