In August, former chairman Anders Lidén resigned from the post.
Since then, the Truth Commission for the Sami people has missed the chairman.
“Very competent”
Recently, however, the government proposed a name for the Sami Parliament’s steering group. SVT Sápmi finds that the potential chairman caused a great deal of debate within the steering group before agreeing to unanimously say no.
– This person was very competent but not to lead the Truth Commission, says Håkan Jonsson, the Sami Parliament’s chairman.
He continues:
– We believe that the person you have proposed does not at all meet the requirements profile. That is why we were very unanimous in the steering group.
The requirements profile that the Sami Parliament has developed together with the government states, among other things, that the chairman must have legal competence and competence on Sami industries and culture.
Jonsson: Must be an approved
What is happening now is unclear. The government could decide to proceed with the name anyway – but according to Jonsson, they will in all likelihood not.
– In order for the Commission to gain confidence, there must be approval from the Sami Parliament’s steering group, he says.
He now hopes that the government will soon return with new proposals for the potential chairman.
