The government and the Swedish Democrats agree on certain amendments to gun legislation, the government writes in a press release.
“The terrible act of violence in Örebro raises several central issues of arms legislation. In May 2024, the 2022 Weapons Investigation submitted its report “An appropriate gun legislation” to the government. The report is currently being prepared in the Government Offices and the Government will return with a Law Council’s remit, ”is in the press release.
The proposals for new law
The Government and SD, among other things, want to clarify the rules for suitability testing. What is proposed is that age, knowledge and skills, legal obedience and medical circumstances should be taken into account in the trial. Doctors’ reporting obligation and the police’s ability to revoke permits must be retained in the new Arms Act.
You also want to limit access to certain semi-automatic weapons, such as AR-15.
“There are certain types of weapons that are so dangerous that in exceptional cases they should only be held for civilian purposes. AR-15 is an example of a weapon that is compatible with large military weapons magazines and can cause a lot of damage in a short time, ”the government writes in the press release.
In addition, they want to strengthen the work of reporting people who are unsuitable for weapons possession to the police authority.
“Against this background, the government and the Swedish Democrats agree to give the Police Authority and the National Board of Health the task of strengthening and developing the work on notification of persons who, for medical reasons, are unsuitable to hold firearms,” they write.
