The avalanche danger is significant in the Abisko and Riksgränsfjällen, Västra Vindelfjällen and southern Lapland mountains. Storm winds and weather changes create dangerous conditions.
A milder yellow warning applies to southern Lapland mountains.
Avalanche hazard in the mountains – SMHI: Don’t give out
It is unwise to go out on the mountains unnecessarily, the snow can turn into rain, the freezing risk is large and rescue efforts can be both risky and take a long time, according to SMHI.
At the same time, the avalanche danger in the three mountain areas is estimated to be significant, with dangerous conditions – which means a third on the five -degree risk scale.
People are asked not to stay near or below steep slopes, according to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency’s site Avalanche forecasts.
Especially areas on the calf mountains that have had shelter are risky. But rain has meant that even so -called wet avalanches can be a problem from the tree line and downwards.
Storm winds combined with snow, plus degrees and rain weaken the snow cover considerably. Spontaneous avalanches are probable, mainly in slopes that are protected from the wind.
In some areas, the wind has also moved a lot of loose snow to leeks leaning east. There, the driven snow settles heavy on top of an already weak snow cover.
The avalanche warning is currently valid until 6 pm on Friday.
