WhatsApp, the famous Instant Meta messaging, has many very practical functions, some being sometimes unsuspected. In addition to offering different communication channels (text messages, audio and video calls), to manage group conversations and create events, or to allow file sharing, it can be used to share your location.

This function is rather reassuring. Thanks to her, you can keep an eye on your children when they come back from school. It can also be useful if you have to go home alone at night, or to share your trip with a trusted third party who can make sure you have arrived at your home. It can also be used if you want your loved ones to follow you during a solo mountain bike outing, in case you have a problem.

You can choose, share your current position, share the address of a nearby location, or even share live location. It is this last option that interests us here. The operation is carried out directly in the conversation, in the various publication and sharing options offered by the application. Just press the + button (iOS) or the trombone icon (on Android) displayed in the text input field.

Then choose “location” and allow WhatsApp to use your position. Finally, choose the “Share the live location” option. All you have to do is define a duration (15 minutes, 1 hour or 8 hours) and possibly add a comment and send your position by pressing the dedicated button for this purpose. Your interlocutor then immediately receives a card displaying your position and your trips in real time.

Once activated, your geographical position remains visible by your correspondent for the whole duration defined. It is obviously possible to stop the sharing of your location without having to wait for the end of the duration chosen at the start, by pressing “Stop sharing”.
