Customs authorities prevented the company to smuggle the beetle to the United States Brief news

Authorities say they have prevented the company to smuggle living beetles in the United States through the International Airport of Los Angeles.

Attempts had been made to smuggle around 13 centimeters in length of Japanese food in January, according to authorities.

The US Customs and Border Guard CBP estimates that nearly 40 shells were smuggled for sale to exotic insects.

However, according to the CBP, harmless beetles can be a significant threat to US agricultural resources. The beetles can cause serious damage when eating plants, leaves and roots, and by laying the trunks of the trees, CBP says.
