30 million fewer tulips are expected to be grown in Sweden this year, according to the industry organization Blomsterfämjandet. A regular year, 160 million tulips are grown on farms around the country.
The reason is that the tulip bulbs are grown in the Netherlands, where large amounts of rain have destroyed the cultivations. This, in turn, affects tulip growers in Sweden who buy bulbs from the country.
“A large tulip -loving country”
Sweden is the country in the world that buys the most tulips, according to Malin Hidesäter at Flower Promotion.
– We are a large tulip -loving country. The tulips come at the right time when we long for the light and then the flowers become messengers that spring is on the entrance.
