Humiliated by “the strange defeat” of June 1940 and four years of occupation and collaboration, France finds a place among the allies thanks to the colonial troops which take part in the liberation of its territory. The harsh winter 1944-1945, however, marks an additional step, where its action becomes decisive in the reconquest of Alsace and Lorraine and opens the way to its commitment to German territory.
