How about a job where you decide for title, tasks and pay? Philip Bärring can answer that question, who has just landed a job at Skellefteå municipality.
Skellefteå Municipality’s PR campaign was named “A job without borders”. In an attempt to attract new employees, the municipality announced a service with odd conditions this autumn: Salary, title and duties would be determined by the applicant.
Out of 535 applicants, it was finally 29-year-old Philip Bärring who combed home the win. In March, he starts working as a democracy developer at Skellefteå municipality.
You are from Stockholm, and live in Linköping, how does it feel to move to Skellefteå?
– I was there for the first time in January, then I got there in the middle of a snowstorm so I didn’t see much of town. But I got a good feeling and look forward to my move, says Philip Bärring.
A cheeky question, but what have you decided for your self?
– I gave a claim of SEK 37,000 to SEK 43,000. And the municipality offered SEK 40,000. It was a sum I felt comfortable with and it felt pretty normal. For me, the most important thing is that I get to work with something that feels important.
What tasks have you attributed to yourself?
– Working with the Citizens’ Council. It is a method where a council that reflects society should be involved in decision -making to reduce the distance between political decisions and the population.
How come you chose to search with the title of democracy developers?
– Skellefteå is a municipality that is growing and then there is much to think about, for example in extensions of neighborhoods. It is important that it happens democratically, and then I think that the Citizens’ Council can be used in a good way.
