Västtrafik scrap the timetable – order the bus to the door

There are now just a few steps to the bus for Lars-Ove Persson, since the tests of bus on demand began in Örby south of Borås. The line traffic that Lars-Ove previously used was a ten minute walk away, and went only once an hour. But with Västtrafik’s new service, the travelers themselves can book when and where they want to go.

-It will be more on our own terms because we can decide for ourselves when the bus will come, says Lars-Ove Persson.

Already this spring, two bus lines are closed down and the timetables are removed, to be replaced by the new service. Instead, travelers may book the bus themselves in an app. There you order when and where you want to go, and from which stop. At the same time, similar models are being tested around the country.

Critical voices

According to Västtrafik, no one should have more than 400 meters to the nearest boarding or have to wait more than 20 minutes. 40 virtual stops have also been added in addition to the 50 physical ones that already exist.

But there are those who are hesitant about the new technology.

– I am a pensioner and do not want to move on with these vending machines and the stuff, says Esko Raitio.

Jennifer Nilzén thinks in the same track.

– I think of the elderly. They are not very good with mobiles, so it is difficult for them.

More ways to book a bus

For over a year, the service has been tested in parallel with line traffic, and according to Västtrafik, the app has been well received.

– One of our fears was that the elderly would have a hard time, but in general they have thought it works well, says Per Nyrenius, development manager at Västtrafik.

And if you do not want to use the app, there will be another way to book a bus.

– When we replace line -off traffic, you will also be able to book by phone, says Per Nyrenius.

Same price

The ticket price is the same as before, and the hope is that the new system will get more people to go collectively.

-Our goal is that we get 10-20% more who want to go collectively and that Bus on demand will then replace today’s timetable traffic. We aim for the corresponding costs per trip as it is today.
