Customs duties: Mexico, Canada and China retaliate

Customs duties Mexico Canada and China retaliate

The United States has imposed particularly high customs duties in Mexico, Canada and China since February 1. Donald Trump wants to put pressure on these countries to combat illegal immigration and drug trafficking. But their respective governments launch their response.

Donald Trump began a trade war with its three main business partners: China, Mexico and Canada. According to him, it is by putting pressure on these three countries that drug trafficking and illegal immigration to the United States will be able to stop. He accuses China of not actively fighting against exporting components that make it possible to make certain drugs, mainly fentanyl. Mexico is accused of matches with the groups of narco-trafic that pass this drug to the United States, and to let illegal immigration be made. As for Canada, he is accused of letting drug manufacturing develop on its territory. 25% customs duties have therefore been taxed on products from Canada and Mexico, and an additional 10% of those already existing on Chinese products.

But these three countries have not planned to let it go. Canada has already started its response, and Mexico and China are about to do the same. The trade war is declared between the four countries.

Canada response

The day after this announcement of increased customs duties, Canada reacted by imposing similar rules for American products. Because if Canada benefits from its exports to the United States, the reverse is also verified. The oranges, the bourbon, and even certain clothes are exported to Canada, which gives off a lot of wealth for the United States. As the Canadian Prime Minister announced, Justin Trudeau, Canada will therefore tax fruit juices, furniture, shoes, wine, bourbon, sports equipment … up to 25% “for a total of 155 billions of Canadian dollars “, or 102 billion euros.

Justin Trudeau also called American citizens by the unit by favoring the consumption of Canadian products instead of American products.

Mexico response

Mexico has already announced that it also replied against the United States. On X, President Claudia Sheinbaum first rejected the accusations of the government with criminal groups, qualifying them as slander. She also calls on the United States to take measures to combat drug trafficking in their territory.
Regarding the commercial response, nothing has yet been done. However, Claudia Sheinbaum announced that she had given the order to implement a plan to protect the economic interests of the country, surely with customs prices.

China’s response

Beijing has also “firmly opposed” to new American customs rights, saying that there were “no winners” possible in a trade war. “Corresponding” measures are promised in Washington to “resolutely protect the rights and interests” Chinese, reports RFI. In addition, China has announced, via its Ministry of Commerce, that it would file a complaint against the United States with the World Trade Organization (WTO).
