What is Northern Lights really?
The northern lights occur due to the sun and can last up to several hours. News24 Have talked to Markus JansonProfessor of Astrophysics, who tells how the light occurs.
– The sun sends out charged particles, the solar wind is called. The solar wind can be stronger or weaker. When the solar wind is reasonably strong, the charged particles that are around the earth’s atmosphere affect. As the particles move through the earth’s atmosphere, it starts to shine, Janson explains.
The northern lights usually go in blue and green shades. The color of the light depends on different gases.
– The gases have different energy levels that determine the color, Janson says.

Most often, the northern lights in northern Sweden are visible around the Arctic Circle, but last year it was possible to see the northern lights in southern Sweden as well. The reason why it was possible to look further down the country was due to the sun being in a so -called active phase and with it came stronger solar wind.
– The sun goes in cycles. Sometimes it is in a more active phase and then it is more often a strong solar wind with a lot of northern lights. It was it both last year and this year, says Janson.
