For ten years, the consumer association “Äkta vara” has held a competition where customers can nominate and vote for which food they consider to be the “Food Scam of the Year”.
The finalists in “Food Scam of the Year 2024”
This year’s finalists in the competition nobody wants to win are: Axa gold fruit muesli, Järna ice cream and Alvesta ice cream, Ica Pasta tortellini ricotta & spinach, Gevalia coffee Ebony and Milea and more and Mutti pizza sauce classica.

Muttis Pizza sauce in windy weather – contains 17 percent water
The reason Mutti is nominated for “Food scam of the year 2024” is because their pizza sauce “Mutti Pizza Sauce Classica” is diluted with water.
IN Genuine product’s justification it says: “Instead of having crushed tomato on the pizza, tomato giant Mutti suggests we use this special pizza sauce. The ‘rich’ sauce has an ‘authentic taste of Italian tomatoes’. So how did you get this taste? Among otherwise by diluting it with 17 percent water.Otherwise it contains tomatoes and a little salt.Funnily enough, these two ingredients also make up the content of Mutti’s regular crushed tomatoes, which are therefore both undiluted and cheaper. In one store, a can of crushed tomatoes is 5 kroner cheaper and in another a full 12 kroner cheaper, compared to the pizza sauce.”

Mutti hits back at the criticism
Mutti themselves believe that the amount of water is a deliberate choice to improve the user experience. In a comment to News24 they fight back against Äkta vara’s justification and respond to the criticism.
– Although they both contain tomatoes and a small amount of salt, they are different products designed for specific purposes, with different formulations and production processes. Pizza sauce Classica’s production process is specially designed to deliver a finished solution that guarantees easy spreading and optimal cooking results, says Mutti in a comment to Nyheter24.
The reason they diluted their pizza sauce with water is to facilitate the spread of the sauce and reduce the risk of it burning at high temperatures, they tell Nyheter24.

The winner of the Food Scam of the Year 2024 will be revealed live on TV4’s Nyhetsmorgon on January 29.
