The Colorado Avalanche played their first game in the NHL after Mikko Rantanen traded to Carolina. The match as Boston’s guest ended in Colorado’s defeat. Boston won 3–1.

Artturi Lehkonen gave Colorado the lead Juuso Pärssisen pass early in the second period, but it was the Avalanche’s only goal.

At the beginning of the third period Morgan Geekie had two hits for Boston. David Pastrnak finished the final numbers to an empty finish.

Those who moved from Carolina to Colorado Jack Drury and Martin Necas were immediately on ice. Necas, who played effectively in Carolina, got more than 25 minutes of ice time and Drury a good 15 minutes. Both were left without power points.
