Sweden has finally reached ski successes on the men’s side.
When both Edvin Anger and William Poromma took their first world cup victories.
But now the legend Gunde Svan comes with harsh words.
Last World Cup weekend in French Les Rousses offered incredible Swedish success. Edvin Anger won the sprint and took his first World Cup victory in his career, as did William Poromaa A day later.
Sweden’s grand success
Poromaa won the mass start in two miles and it was not only his first victory on the World Cup, but also Sweden’s first on the men’s side in a very long time. As much as 2,863 days had passed since a Swedish gentleman won a distance race at the World Cup last.
– Was it so long ago? I think that when I hear it, says the legend Gunde Svan to TV4.
– The success of Edvin (Anger) and William (Poromaa) are very important for the men’s team.

But then Svan weighs its great concern for the Swedish skiing team and Swedish skiing in general. Already during his time as national team manager for Sweden 2007-09 he realized the dark truth.
– Then I was beaten, when I saw figures from the colleges, how the development had been from adolescence. Those test results were very low; Test values and oxygen uptake were worse then than it was in my time, he says in an interview with TV4.
– Everything else is moving forward, and this is going backwards. I didn’t get it together, so I got really worried. Do we have completely wrong system suddenly in Sweden?
Gunde Svan’s concern
Gunde Svan then turned to other ski countries such as Germany and Italy for more answers. Again, he was shocked by what he found out.
-Then they told them that they had had to lower the bar, that the riders could not tolerate as hard training as they thought, says Gunde in the TV interview.
– They are pushed for training, which they used to do maybe, but this spontaneous sport outside, the foundation when they are really small, it is gone and I do not think we see before they come up in national team collections.

The swan puts his finger on what is the big problem and why the levels have dropped so much for Swedish skiers.
– What distinguishes is sedentary in the youth, with the “toad” and the phone’s entry is linked to the fact that spontaneous sports at really young years are almost completely gone, says Gunde.
