Swedish dogs mysteriously ill avoid this food

About fifty dogs in the Netherlands have contracted a mysterious “werewolf syndrome”, which makes the animals anxious and insecure. Danish authorities have also raised the alarm about infected dogs with the same symptoms.

Of these, at least 13 dogs have died – and chewing bones of a certain type are pointed out as a possible cause of the cases of illness.

Symptoms of werewolf syndrome

The symptoms of werewolf syndrome are often neurological, including:

  • Concern
  • Anxiety
  • Excessive howling
  • According to information from the Swedish Agency for Agriculture on 17 January, seven suspected cases of werewolf syndrome have been reported in Sweden.

    – She woke up one evening and started howling and running around the house, at the same time peeing everywhere, says a dog owner who SVT talked to, whose dog is suspected of having the syndrome.

The chewing bones you should not give your dog right now

“The chewing bones in question have been purchased from the web companies Bitiba and Zooplus. These companies have informed the Swedish Agency for Agriculture that they have recalled the affected packaging from the Barkoo brand and will contact their customers,” writes The Swedish Agency for Agriculture on its website.

These are four variants of “Kaustange” and “Kauknochen”:

  • Barkoo kaustange, natural, 29 centimeters
  • Barkoo kauknochen, knotted nature, 11 centimeters
  • Barkoo Kauknochen, knotted, 24 centimeters
  • Barkoo Kauknochen, knotted with Spirulina, 12 centimeters

    The companies are responsible

“Whoever releases feed on the market within the EU is responsible for ensuring that the feed is safe and must take the necessary measures,” writes the Swedish Agency for Agriculture.

It is therefore important that you contact the company if you have observed symptoms of illness in your dog and suspect that the food is the cause.
