James Bond star Judi Dench is blind

The actress Judi Dench is known for several major films such as Shakespeare in Love and Notes on a Scandal. But she is perhaps most famous as the head of MI5 M in the James Bond films, a role she took on in 1995 in Golden Eye.

Judi Dench has a long career behind her, and is multiple Oscar nominees. She actually won an Oscar in 1999 in the category of best supporting actress for her performance in Shakespeare in Love.

In 2012, Judi Dench chose to share that she had been diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) – or age spots on the retina. It is a disease that can make vision blurry and distorted, and dark or empty areas can appear in the central field of vision.

When she recorded her last James Bond film, the impaired vision affected her, writes Danish Avisen. Now the disease has escalated and caused her to lose her sight completely.

– There’s always someone who has to come with me now, because I can’t see, and otherwise I’d walk into something or trip and fall, says Judi Dench in the Fearless podcast, writes The newspaper.
