After 7 years, we finally know what Sargeras was actually aiming for

The giant sword that resides in the world of World of Warcraft was aimed at something specific. And now we know what.

It is considered one of the epic moments in World of Warcraft history. The leader of the Burning Legion, the Fallen Titan Sargeras, summons his giant sword and slams it into the planet Azeroth. Even if the other Titans then manage to capture Sargeras – the sword is in place. And that continues to this day.

But many asked the question: What exactly was Sargeras aiming at? Was the planet in general the target? Or was it a very specific place?

The evidence from the last few weeks and months makes it clear what Sargeras wanted.

Not a death blow, but a liberation blow?

When Sargeras rammed the sword into Azeroth, there were several theories at the time as to what he might have been aiming for. The most obvious answer: The World Soul of Azeroth. But that would probably have been possible anywhere on the planet. Blizzard had already confirmed that the attack was targeted. Therefore, the next answer may have been the Old God C’thun.

More clues then came in a very unusual way – namely via the trading post. When Blizzard announced The War Within, a number of new transmogs were unlocked in the Trading Post. With these transmogs, if you spoke to a hermit in Silithus, he would explain that “Sargeras is far too great a tactician to have just happened upon Silithus.”

The Sword of Sargeras is still in Azeroth.

This results in the most current assumption, which also fits with the previous story of The War Within:

Sargeras did not directly attack the World Soul, but rather the Titan construct that is holding the World Soul captive and is ultimately intended to transform Azeroth into a Titan. Because that could free Azeroth in the long term and thus stop the Titans – which in turn brings Sargeras closer to his plan to end life in the cosmos.

Because it should be clear to Sargeras that Azeroth is not an ally of the Titans and has been held captive for many millennia. When Azeroth becomes completely “free,” she will likely face off against the Titans – and that may be the battle we see in The Last Titan expansion.

In one of his latest videos, the YouTuber and analyst Bellular brings together all the clues and tells the story from Sargeras’ perspective – and then a lot of things make much more sense and bring clarity:

What is particularly important to know here is that Sargeras had contact with Azeroth for a brief moment – many, many millennia ago. There he saw Azeroth open her “eye” and look at Sargeras for the briefest of moments. Sargeras was truly “enraptured” by this sight – and yet he did not deviate from his plan to destroy all life in the cosmos.

This theory – which is now considered confirmed with all the clues – also fits wonderfully with an item that a resourceful player found in the World of Warcraft data. Because the legendary “distributor” of Azeroth could have been deactivated.
