The almost finished successor to an infamous MMORPG has been discontinued

Due to high losses in the last financial year, the Chinese publisher Perfect World Games has announced tough austerity measures. These include the setting of several game projects.

Which MMORPG is it? At a press conference in April 2024, publisher Perfect World Games announced the ambitious action MMORPG Perfect New World for Steam, PS5 and Xbox Series. This was supposed to be the quasi-successor to Perfect World from 2006.

Perfect New World’s final round of testing took place in November 2024. This actually wanted to present players with a noticeably improved version of the online role-playing game compared to the heavily criticized beta from May 2023. After the test, however, there was radio silence. The last update was in February 2024, in the form of a post on X about the Spring Festival.

Here is the trailer for the beta test of Perfect New World:

What has been announced now? Several Asian websites are reporting that Chinese publisher Perfect World Games has announced tough austerity measures due to high losses in the past financial year. These measures include the discontinuation of four game projects where those responsible were not convinced of the financial success:

  • Perfect New World
  • Spiritual Cage
  • Code Name Lucking
  • Code Name New World
  • Perfect New World is the most advanced game on the list. There will also be a reduction in the size of the development teams.

What am I missing? Sleek graphics, action-packed fights, the ability to fly with the character – these are the things that the previous trailers for Perfect New World made us want to launch. At the same time, the feedback from the beta phases and regional peculiarities such as the gender lock in the class/national election clouded the anticipation.

On the latter point, the predecessor Perfect World was not exactly known for a fair payment model. On the contrary, the Free2Play MMORPG was largely responsible for the term Pay2Win being coined and spread within the community.
