The tax on ISK

From the turn of the year, all savings in ISK (investment savings account) up to SEK 150,000 will be tax-free – a free amount that will be increased to SEK 300,000 from 2026.

On amounts beyond that, the savings capital is taxed with a standard tax, which next year will be 0.89 percent of the value of the account.

They benefit from the tax breaks

ISK, which in recent years has become one of the more popular forms of savings in Sweden, has around three million private individuals who use the form of savings and who can now look forward to tax relief.

– All of them will receive lower taxes because SEK 150,000 will be tax-free. However, the idea of the reform is to get more people to start saving, so hopefully even those who are thinking about starting a savings can now have a carrot to get started and save, says Nordnet Bank’s savings economist Frida Bratt to News24 and then adds:

– A saving of SEK 150,000 would result in a tax for 2025 of SEK 1,335, which you therefore do not have to pay. However, of course you pay tax on the excess. Even that tax, however, has fallen as a result of lower government loan interest, to 0.89 percent.

But the big question is consequently how you as a private person, with money in an investment savings account, can use the tax relief?

According to Bratt, unlike other additions and deductions that you regulate in the return, you do not need to do anything at all.

– The tax-free basic level comes automatically as a deduction in the declaration and is not something you need to request yourself.

But are there any disadvantages to the tax reform on ISK?

– Personally, I would have liked to have seen the removal of the surcharge of one percentage point that the previous government introduced in 2016 and 2018, respectively. But I think that the introduction of a tax-free basic level is a very good reform, which I hope will get more people to start saving and on thus getting increased security and perhaps also freedom, Frida Bratt concludes by telling Nyheter24.
