Sanxenxo welcomes, from this Friday, three days of the second round of the Spanish Cup circuit, which is part of the Xacobeo Trophy. The main novelty is that the fleet is increasing because it is in full countdown to the Xacobeo 6mR Worlds next June and the ships want to continue taking steps forward in their preparation. Up to 15 units will be thrown into the water of the Pontevedra estuary at 3:00 p.m. to start the competition.
Among the Classics fleet, two new teams join this weekend: the French ‘Dix Août’ by Louis Hecklyone of the most competitive in the French fleet and which already competed in the Pontevedra estuary in the European last September, and Finnish ‘Astree III’ by Ossi Paija, who was third in the continental event. Along with them, there will be no shortage of regulars such as Pedro Campos’ ‘Bribon 500’, Miguel Lago’s ‘Alibaba II’, Íñigo Echenique’s ‘Caprice’, Santiago Campos’ ‘Stardust’, the also Finnish ‘Toy’ by Juha Salonen and the current leader of the circuit after his victory last month, Alicia Freire’s ‘Titia’, who with Mauricio Sánchez-Bella at the helm will once again have the Olympic medalist Nico Rodríguez among its ranks.
In the Open InterRías division, the American joins the fleet ‘Scoundrel’. The team commanded by James A. Hilton is one of the latest additions to the World Cup, and will debut this weekend in the Pontevedra estuary to face for the first time what will be their rivals in the big event of the season. Violeta Álvarez’s ‘Stella’, winner of the first round of the Spanish Cup, Eugenio Galdón’s ‘Maybe XIV’, Patrick Monteiro’s ‘Seljm’ from Portugal, John Harald’s ‘Scoundrel One’ and Richard Göransson’s ‘Filippa’ from Sweden and Michael Larsson’s ‘Delphina’ complete the fleet.
This Friday, the 22nd, will be the first of the three days of competition in Sanxenxo. The Regatta Committee expects to complete a maximum of six races (two each day) and the forecast is for winds from the south-southwest that could exceed 15 knots on Saturday afternoon.
