A meeting of generations is taking place in the NCIS universe, at least behind the camera: In the prequel NCIS: Origins, Austin Stowell plays franchise hero Leroy Jethro Gibbs at a young age. By Mark Harmon, who played the role for 20 years, he received important advice.
Mark Harmon gives unhealthy advice to NCIS colleagues
As Stowell told TV Insider, Harmon gave him a lot of advice for his role and treated him like a “Sage” restrained. Harmon has portrayed Gibbs since his first appearance in 2003. He has apparently given him advice on a number of occasions, but this time Stowell reveals a particularly meaningful piece of NCIS wisdom:
I have many voices [beim Dreh] in your head. One is that of Mark Harmon, who stood by me like a wise man. He’s literally done this for 20 years and can now give me the inside scoop on how my life is going to turn out. First of all, he explained to me, that sleep is overrated.
Harmon’s words, if Stowell represents them truthfully, are not idle talk. American TV productions are notorious for their tight schedules. Harmon himself initially disliked the hassle of filming NCIS so much that he didn’t want to accept the role of Gibbs.
But the moment of doubt passed, Harmon accepted the role and embodied the biggest cult figure in the NCIS universe for several decades. It is not known exactly how much he slept. One can only hope that Stowell doesn’t implement the advice too regularly.
