It was earlier in January that Lidl Danmark made the decision that, before the end of 2028, it must have phased out tobacco and nicotine products such as cigarettes and snuff – something that Dagligvarunytt, among others, reported on at the time.
The decision is based on a list of proposals for a smoke- and nicotine-free future from the Danish Medical Association.
– At Lidl, we are happy to read the Medical Association’s new proposal and fully support the ambition to create a smoke- and nicotine-free future. We believe that the retail trade has an important role to play in limiting access to tobacco and we want to lead by example, have Khalil Jehya Talebdeputy purchasing director at Lidl Denmark, said in a press release that Dagligvarunytt has seen.

He then continued further:
– The research shows that the number of points of sale contributes to reducing the consumption of tobacco and nicotine products, which is why we, as the first grocery chain in Denmark, have set a date for when we will sell the last tobacco products. It is not only about doing the right thing for our customers, but also about taking responsibility for public health in Denmark.

Lidl Sweden’s message
But will Lidl Sweden stick with the decision? When News24 contacts the store chain’s press officer Ingrid Arinell she answers like this:
“Lidl Sweden takes responsibility for tobacco sales by complying with legislation and industry guidelines concerning permits, supervision and age limits. We are now following Lidl Denmark’s development in this matter with interest. However, there are currently no decisions to end tobacco sales.”
