In December, Canal+ subscribers learned by email that the price of their subscription would increase in 2025. But surprise on January 22: this announcement would be due to a technical error, the prices will not change!
[Mis à jour le mercredi 22 janvier à 17 h 35] Last December, Canal+ surprised its subscribers. While the group had just celebrated its 40th anniversary, entered the London Stock Exchange and announced its intention to leave TNT (see our article), the audiovisual group had made a decision that risked dissatisfying many subscribers: a increase of 2 euros per month on most packages was to be expected from January 2025. This increase was to concern a large part of the offers, from the most affordable at 19.99 euros per month up to the packages “premium” like Canal+ Friends & Family at 81.99 euros. For their part, subscribers had been informed by email of this change, without any content enrichment being announced in return.
This change came at a pivotal moment for the Canal+ group. Indeed, the encrypted channel was on the verge of losing several flagship services, notably Disney channels and content as well as the Disney+ platform. These deletions have since been confirmed and have had repercussions on offers such as the Press Pass, leaving subscribers perplexed by this price increase. Why pay more when the catalog is shrinking? This question remains without a clear answer.
Canal + subscriptions: rising prices without additional content
At that time, Canal+ justified this increase by citing its desire to continue to offer “the best possible experience” to its customers. An insufficient marketing argument to appease the critics. On social networks, reactions were not long in coming and many users expressed their dissatisfaction, denouncing the fact that no new functionality or additional content accompanied this potential increase.
The offers concerned are numerous and varied. For example, the basic Canal+ live/replay offer, which will increase to 29.99 euros per month, and the Canal+ Sport offer at 47.99 euros. For young people, prices are slightly lower but also impacted: subscriptions for those under 26 will see their price increase to 15.99 euros for Canal+ and 24.99 euros for the sports offer. Subscribers who have subscribed to current promotions are not directly affected by this increase, as long as their promotional offer remains active.
Canal + subscriptions: ultimately, prices will not increase
Against all expectations, the increase in the price list will not take place. Indeed, the encrypted channel expressed itself this Wednesday, January 22 in an email addressed once again to subscribers. The reason for the December email is in fact an error and linked to a “technical malfunction”. In addition, the group wants to be reassuring and reminds its members that their offer “remains unchanged” and that their “subscription will continue under the same conditions as currently, in particular price and duration”.
So backpedaling in the face of criticism or a real technical malfunction? The email in any case seems to be verified and concerns customers holding a non-binding offer. To be sure that your Canal+ subscription has not subtly been increased by a few euros, check the emails from the official address ([email protected]) and consult your monthly payment installments in the Customer Area of the Canal site to verify that nothing has changed.
