Detention can be replaced by house arrest

The government has received a new proposal from the Correctional Service regarding an alternative to detention.

According to the proposal, which the Siren news agency has seen, the Correctional Service believes that there are reasons to introduce house arrest with electronic monitoring instead of physical detention.

The authority predicts an increase in the number of prison terms by 78 percent over the next ten years. The increase is a consequence of the Tidö parties’ reforms and extensive criminal investigations linked to gang crime, according to the proposal.

The Correctional Service does not believe that the planned addition of new detention places will be enough, but that alternative solutions are required. The solution in question would free up 170-300 detention places per day, according to the petition.

“The investigation’s proposal involves a flexible system with alternatives to detention that can be adapted to the needs of the individual case,” the Probation Service writes in the documents.

A similar proposal on house arrest was put forward in 2016.
