Luleå students build smart cities – compete in Minecraft with AI

For two weeks, the students have worked on creating a city in the game Minecraft and through that have solved social problems. Via link, they present their cityscapes to a jury remotely.

– It has been a fun way to teach the children about what is in a city and about democracy. By creating awareness of where AI exists, both the visible and less visible, says teacher Ida Pirttijärvi.

Challenging collaboration

– It has been difficult to come to an agreement when you have different opinions, but when we did, we managed more and it got better, says Moritz Ahlzén.

School Hackathon is a competition where middle school students from all over the country compete to build the best city in the game Minecraft.

– They compete in how to build a society with AI to make it better, an “AI-topia” quite simply, says Sofia Hägg, project manager for young entrepreneurship.

Great competition

From Norrbotten, 35 schools, 677 students, from the whole county are participating and the winner will go on to the national final, which will take place on January 28.
