Trump defends his decision to pardon congressional attackers | News in brief

President of the United States Donald Trump defends his decision to pardon the persons convicted of the 2021 takeover of the Congress building. He shared his views at a press conference in the White House.

Trump was asked if he is not sending a message with his pardons that it is acceptable to attack police officers.

According to Trump, those pardoned “were in prison for years” at the same time that “murderers don’t even go to prison in this country”.

He added that those convicted of the Congress attack had been put in a “disgusting” and “horrible” prison.

Trump was specifically asked about the leaders of the far-right Proud Boys Enrique Tarrion and By Joe Biggs of amnesties. Both had been sentenced to long prison sentences. The president described the duo’s sentences as “ridiculous” and “unreasonable.”

Trump emphasized his support for the police force, saying he is releasing two officers from prison who were arrested for “chasing criminals.”
