Born in Belgrade in 1987, Novak Djokovic experienced the Kosovo war and the NATO bombings in 1999 up close, before leaving his country for Germany and building his destiny as a tennis player. Very marked by this period, the former world No. 1 often repeats that this tragedy made him stronger.
“We were helpless, fortunately we all survived and we all learned from this experience and this situation a great life lesson,” he explained in 2013. Also invited to comment on the situation in Syria, Djokovic also explained : “I am completely against any kind of weapons, any kind of airstrikes […] I’ve had experience with it, I know it doesn’t do anyone any good.”
