Truls Möregårdh deserves the Jerring Prize more than Armand Duplantis

Armand Duplantis became the King of the Sports Gala.
But the big winner is called Truls Möregårdh.
There is someone else who deserves to win the Jerring Prize as much as he does.

This is a comment. The opinions are the writer’s own.

Another edition of Sports gala is over. Sweden’s top sports heroes in 2024 have been crowned, applause has gone warm, tears have flowed, unprepared speeches of thanks have been delivered and two kings have received their rightful tributes.

Duplanti’s show

Many had expected that Armand Duplantis would be the big winner at Monday night’s gala. That was also the case when he had to step on stage on three different occasions for three different awards in the form of the Achievement Gold, Male Athlete of the Year and Performance of the Year.

So incredibly well-deserved for Sweden’s currently biggest sports star, but when it came to the Jerring Prize, “Mondo” was snubbed for the second year in a row. Instead, it was the Olympic hero Truls Möregårdh who got to end the gala in the best way and finally you got the feeling that the award really went to the most worthy winner.

Trul’s worthy winner

Here there has been no talk of voting coups or sympathy votes being decided. Truls goes straight into the Swedish people’s soul and what he did during the summer Olympics in Paris is unprecedented in the blue-yellow sports movement for many years.

Möregårdh created total ping pong fever in our elongated country and awakened a slumbering nation that longed for success in this particular sport. In fairness, he also becomes the very first table tennis player of all time to win the Jerring Prize.

Möregårdh’s tears

The 22-year-old is so incredibly genuine and it really shines through how much this award means to him. With tears in his throat, he accepted the People’s Prize and thanked the two most important people in his life.
– Thank you very much. It is truly a state of shock. I want to thank everyone who has supported me in every way. You know who you are. I want to thank two people extra, mother and father, he says in his acceptance speech.
– I know that mother is crying now too, we are crying together. Thank you for all you do. You really are the best parents in the world. I would never be where I am today without you. I love you guys. Thank you, Sweden. You guys are the best.

Truls Möregårdh is such an incredibly worthy winner and deserves, in my eyes, the Jerring Prize so much more than Armand Duplantis this year. Mondo also showed his great humility and paid tribute to his compatriot who snuffed him out on the perfect night.
– Truls is so wonderful and he inspired me so much during the Olympics. I am so happy for him. Truls is the king!, says Mondo after the Sports Gala.
