Tennis: Paula Badosa considered retiring – now in the semifinals: “Give it one last chance”

Thus, the eleventh-seeded Spaniard is ready for her first semifinal in a Grand Slam. Badosa said before the match that she was looking for revenge for the loss at the Beijing WTA tournament last fall.

– I have gone through many things and am a better player now. I can handle the emotions better, said 27-year-old Badosa, who for the first time beat a top 10 player in a Grand Slam, according to AP.

Less than a year ago, Badosa considered retirement after severe problems with a stress fracture in her back that refused to heal and where cortisone treatments had no effect.

“Wanted to give it one last try”

– I wanted to give it one last chance. I’m really proud of what we went through with my whole team and especially how I fought through all that, especially mentally, says Badosa.

Coco Gauff was coming off a 13-game winning streak and fell heavily after numerous mistakes of her own and as many as six double faults.

– I’m obviously disappointed, but I’m not completely devastated, says third-seeded Gauff, who was one of the favourites.
