President of the United States Joe Biden pardoned a civil rights activist who died on his last day in power in 1940 Marcus Garvey. Garvey was a Jamaican-born writer and speaker who was considered a prophet by some Rastafarians.
Garvey was a role model, among other things For Martin Luther King. Garvey campaigned for people of African descent to return to Africa and reclaim the continent from their European colonial masters. He also worked on a practical level and founded, among other things, the Negro World magazine and Black Star Line, which was a black-owned shipping company that operated internationally.
Garvey was once sentenced to five years in prison for mail fraud. President Calvin Coolidge later commuted the sentence, and Garvey was deported to Jamaica. He eventually died in London.
