Shock announcement about Karlgårdsbron in Skellefteå – will be 444 million kroner more expensive

In March 2024, the construction of the Karlgårdsbron in Skellefteå was stopped after a conflict between the contractor Kauno Tiltai and the municipality. The contractor disagreed with the municipality about payment and the municipality was dissatisfied with both the quality of the work and the schedule.

A new procurement was made, and then it was Skanska Sverige AB that would complete the bridge.

On Monday, the municipality of Skellefteå held a press conference about the situation for the bridge and then announced that the cost had risen significantly. The new budget is estimated at SEK 744 million, of which SEK 72.5 million is financed by a grant from the Swedish Transport Administration.

– We understood that it would be more expensive to complete the Karlgårdsbron, given the sharp price increases in the construction industry in recent years. But we could not have imagined a budget supplement of SEK 444 million. I have therefore today highlighted the demands that we want to see in future decision documents in order to feel more secure in making decisions about this large investment, says Sara Keisu Lundh (S), who is the chairperson of the community planning board.
