The superpowers the United States and China are trying to deal with critical issues between the countries ahead of Donald Trump’s second presidential term.
Chinese Vice President Han Zheng met with US Vice President-elect JD Vance in the US, the night before Vance and Trump are sworn in in Washington DC on Monday.
During the meeting on Sunday, Han Zheng spoke about fentanyl, trade balance and regional stability, among other things, Trump’s transition team said. According to a Chinese report, he addressed, among other things, “extensive common interests and the enormous scope for cooperation” between the countries, despite “some differences of opinion and friction”.
Donald Trump has threatened to impose tariffs and other measures against China in his second term, but has also talked about ways the two superpowers can cooperate.
Chinese President Xi Jinping is invited to Trump’s inauguration ceremony but will not attend. However, the two leaders already discussed trade, fentanyl and Tiktok in a phone conversation last Friday.
