Hardly any new Star Wars series can do without cameos. Sometimes popular characters from previous chapters of the star saga make an unexpected return. Sometimes a well-known star appears in a strange supporting role. The series from the Mandoverse in particular have made these guest appearances a tradition.
However, Skeleton Crew, the most recent Mandoverse series, turned out to be a frugal pleasure in this regard. As it turns out after the end of season 1, a special flashback was filmed that could have caused quite a stir. Before you continue reading, be expressly before spoilers warned!
Deleted Star Wars scene: Yasmine Al Massri almost appeared as a Jedi in Skeleton Crew
In the 8th episode of Skeleton Crew, the shady pirate Jod Na Nawood reveals his backstory. As a child he lived impoverished and became found by a Jediwho survived the horrors of Order 66. That Jedi taught him a few tricks with the lightsaber and the Force before she was caught.
However, we don’t get to see the mysterious figure – even though we do shot a corresponding scene as the actress Yasmine Al Massri revealed on her Instagram account a few days after the finale was published. She also shares pictures that give us a look at her costume.
Here you will find external content from Instagramwhich complements the article. You can display it and hide it again with one click.
In addition to the pictures, Al Massri also shares her Skeleton Crew experience in words:
This was the shortest acting job I’ve ever done, but the most meaningful for the child in me: [Ich habe] Played a Jedi for a scene in Skeleton Crew. On my last day of filming, I said to the crew, ‘You’ve just got this first female Arab Jedi created. Thanks.
She goes on to say:
Unfortunately, it didn’t make it into the final cut. These things happen. But I just can’t not share my experience and my feelings. [Mein Sohn] Liam even practiced the scene with me and I was able to show off to his friends, which for a moment earned me the coolest respect as a mother.
Maybe one day Lucasfilm will get carried away and release the footage as a deleted scene in the bonus material of a home theater release of Skeleton Crew. For now, Al Massri’s Instagram post is the only concrete insight we have into the scene that was removed from the final cut.
How do you know Yasmine Al Massri? And could she still appear in the Star Wars universe?
Yasmine Al Massri made her acting debut in Caramel in 2007. She then appeared in various film and television productions, including Crossbones and Law & Order: New York. In the thriller Quantico she played the twins Nimah and Raina Amin in 44 episodes between 2015 and 2017. In Castlevania, she lent her voice to Morana.
Although her Skeleton Crew scene was cut, there are various ways to establish Al Massri as a Jedi in the galaxy far, far away. Last but not least, the first season leaves open what happens to Jod. If The Skeleton Crew is renewed for a second season, his past could become important again.
And Al Massri’s Jedi belongs to this pastwhich obviously experienced a tragic story. The third season of The Mandalorian already featured a big flashback that took us to the Jedi Temple at the time of Order 66. The fate of Al Massri’s Jedi could also be illustrated in one way or another in the future.
