A petrol truck had overturned in an accident on the road between the capital Abuja and the city of Kaduna when it caught fire and exploded.
In the Saturday explosion of a truck carrying gasoline in the central parts of Nigeria, the death toll rose to nearly 90 on Sunday. In addition, more than 50 people suffered burns in the explosion. This was reported by the local rescue authorities.
Earlier it was reported that there were more than 70 dead.
A petrol truck carrying 60,000 liters of cargo had overturned in an accident on the road between the capital Abuja and Kaduna when it caught fire and exploded. The fire spread from it to another tank truck.
Most of the dead and injured had gathered there to collect gasoline from the overturned truck.
The price of gasoline has risen sharply in Nigeria recently, and the country is plagued by an economic crisis. President Bola Tinubu ended fuel subsidies last year, and the price of gasoline has increased fivefold in a year and a half.
