Serious lift accident in the Spanish ski resort of Astún

Initially, it was reported that around 30 people were injured in the lift accident, but the Spanish newspapers El Pais and El Mundo write that it is ten people and that the number was feared to be higher at an earlier stage.

Two people must be seriously injured and eight people slightly injured. All have been taken to hospital. In addition, 20 people have been treated on site at the ski resort, writes El País.

The accident occurred at lunchtime after a chairlift broke and collapsed.

– A cable came loose and suddenly the whole chair lift started to jump. People flew out and ran in all directions, says a witness.

Exactly what caused the accident is currently unclear.

Many are stuck

A large number of ambulances and helicopters were called to the scene, and by 4 p.m. around 80 people should have been stuck in the lift, according to the Spanish state television channel TVE, reports Reuters.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez writes in a post on X that he is shocked by the news from the ski resort and writes that the government offers its full support.

“All our thoughts go out to the injured and their families,” he continues.
