Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa and the sixth most populous country in the world with more than 223 million inhabitants.
The BRICS organization of developing countries is getting an influential African member from Nigeria.
According to Brazil, the country that chairs the organization, Nigeria has been invited as a partner country.
The BRICS organization was founded by Brazil, China, Russia, India and South Africa in 2009 as a counter force to the G7 organization of industrialized countries.
Last year, BRICS invited the United Arab Emirates, Iran, Egypt and Ethiopia to membership negotiations. Turkey, Malaysia and Azerbaijan have applied for membership of the organization. Saudi Arabia has already been invited to become a member.
In addition to Nigeria, partner countries include Cuba, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Thailand, Uganda and Uzbekistan.
