The biggest Tarantino mystery will probably never be solved, but there’s a pretty good theory

The biggest Tarantino mystery will probably never be solved but

What did Bill Murray whisper in Scarlett Johansson’s ear in Lost in Translation? Is Kurt Russell really The Thing from Another World? And does that damn top in Inception fall over at the end or not? Humanity will probably never get a definitive answer to all of these big questions in film history.

Also Quentin Tarantino’s cult classic pulp Fiction holds probably the biggest, unsolved mystery of his career, which has been plaguing film fans for over three decades now. Of course that’s what we’re talking about Suitcasewhich the hitmen Vincent Vega (John Travolta) and Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson) are supposed to find for their boss Marsellus Wallace (Ving Rhames). Content never revealed becomes.

Among the numerous theories about the true interior of the suitcase (the jewels from Reservoir Dogs, drugs, God), one particularly interesting one has persisted to this day. And this despite the fact that the world of Pulp Fiction would thus enter supernatural spheres.

Does the suitcase in Pulp Fiction contain Marsellus Wallace’s soul?

The mysterious effect of the suitcase in question is particularly increased by the following scenario: every time it is opened, a appears bright orange light from withinwhich seems to fascinate and almost hypnotize the viewer.

One of the most popular theories, which Screen Rant also addresses, is based on the assumption that the item being transported is no less than the soul of Marsellus Wallace accommodated. The gang boss sold them to the devil and now wants to take them back. A daring but certainly exciting idea, for them at least the following indications speak:

  • The suitcase’s code is 666, a number usually associated with the devil.
  • Marsellus’ neck is adorned with a large plaster. The soul could have been taken from him at this point.
  • Vincent and Jules survive the hail of bullets through a “divine miracle” because they do something “good” and give a person his soul back.
  • According to the theory, it is therefore the luminous soul of Marsellus that Amazement and speechlessness triggers in those who see it. Logical conclusion or absolute nonsense? Everyone should decide that for themselves.

Quentin Tarantino will never reveal what’s really in the suitcase

But what does the Pulp Fiction maker himself have to say about the suitcase discussion? In the now over 30 years since the film was released in theaters, Tarantino has not once did he reveal the contents of the much-noticed object he had conceived. And he never will, as he revealed in an interview a few years ago:

I won’t say what’s in it. It’s up to you to figure out the content and then it’s your film. […] If I tell you what it is, you will [deine Idee] discard. And I don’t want that, [denn] it’s your film.

Tarantino attaches great importance to leaving the inside of the suitcase to the imagination of the audience and thus making Pulp Fiction a subjective viewing experience.

What everyone can probably agree on: The suitcase is a classic MacGuffini.e. a rather arbitrary object that only serves to advance the plot, but is otherwise hardly defined or has a specific use. Other prominent examples of this include the suitcase in Ronin, the “rabbit’s foot” in Mission: Impossible 3 or the unopened FedEx package in Cast Away.
